No one will notice when we stop running local food sections or feature stories. No one will notice that we've combined business sections with that paper in the town only three hours away. And no one will ever notice that the papers are shrinking daily -- I've even seen this at the college paper where I work. It's a version of the emperor's new clothes, but journalists are perpetrating it. That not only decreases the value of our product; it decreases our credibility, too. As journalists, I think we somehow believe we’re pulling the wool over readers’ eyes.

No one will notice when we stop running local food sections or feature stories.

No one will notice that we’ve combined business sections with that paper in the town only three hours away.

And no one will ever notice that the papers are shrinking daily — I’ve even seen this at the college paper where I work.

It’s a version of the emperor’s new clothes, but journalists are perpetrating it. That not only decreases the value of our product; it decreases our credibility, too.
