First thoughts on Philly.com relaunch
Philly.com, the site for the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News relaunched with a much more aggressive design.
The best way to describe the new Philly.com is attitude. This site does not look like your typical stale, stoic newspaper Web site. It packs plenty of spunk.
I like the color pallet, it’s anything but safe. It’s edgy — memorable. I also really like the use of Philadelphia landmarks in the design.
It’s a site that few people will forget after leaving. Most newspaper sites look interchangeable.
I’ll take a closer look at the under pinnings of the site and its features over the next few days. But at least this site looks like the people running Philly.com realize that the old way of doing things wasn’t working.
This is one of the few journalism sites that is actually attractive. Imagine that.

The user comments on a story about the sites’ redesign are decidedly negative, which is usually the case for most redesigns.
I like it, except for that cheesy philly.com logo. The header graphic advertising various buildings and landmarks is kinda cool.
But unfortunately, the two newspapers contributing content to philly.com are both staid, traditional newspaper Web sites — meaning the design sucks.

@Patrick,
I have to strongly agree with you about that Philly.com logo. It is hideous. I feel like the old logo was forced on this new design. It just doesn’t fit. In fact, I’d want to break from the past of Philly.com anyway.
These are just my early thoughts on the site design. I’ll post a site review later this week after I spend a bit of time exploring all the features.
I agree that this site won’t be much of an upgrade unless the actual content becomes better. I do know, however, that Philly.com is actively working on changing that.
