Did your internships pay?

Mindy McAdams has a post about how many journalism internships don’t pay, yet internships are a requirement for employment at most journalism companies.

I want to know how many internships you had during college, what industry they were in and if they paid or not.

I had three internships during college: My first was at a law firm for $10 an hour, my second was as a business intern for the Chicago Tribune for $10 and hour and my third was at a mid-large daily newspaper for credits (unpaid).

I was able to do an unpaid internship for credit because I did it while classes were in session. I was also able to take one less class because of it and was still able to work my campus job.

The unpaid internship did not impact me financially, but I would not have been able to do an unpaid internship over the summer because not only would I have not been able to afford housing, but I also needed to make money for school. Plus, if you have read my post about how journalists need to learn business and marketing, you would know I’m not arrogant or stupid enough to dig myself into a deep hole of debt for a company that has revenues — at least — in the millions.

Far too many journalists are willing to accept low pay and poor working conditions as almost some sort of badge of honor. Being broke is not what the cool kids do. I’m not sure who told you that.

I interned at my hometown daily (essentially created my own internship) unpaid during a school vacation, but had to maintain a second job at the time. It was for neither credit nor pay, but it did get me clips that got me my next job.

I had three part-time journalism internships while in college. Two were on the print side. One was in multimedia. All were unpaid, but I did them during school session and received credit.

My last internship was the summer after I graduated. It was full-time, paid and got me my first job.

I was able to secure a paid internship the summer before my senior year at my hometown daily (a mid-sized town newspaper). But I did know plenty of others who interned for free and even helped one intern who was working for free when I worked in TV. But I do think it is a horrible policy that companies use j-majors like that.

A digital media major at Drexel University in Philly, I interned with The Philadelphia Inquirer’s online desk for six months creating online features and helping to set up a video content system and strategy. The newsroom environment was exciting and stimulating, and it was great to work closely with so many talented reporters.

The internship was paid, and I found that I was making about the same amount of money as other students in my major, even though many of them went to work for digital 3D graphics or interactivity companies. The best part about the experience wasn’t the pay–it was having my field of interest heavily skewed towards wanting to work with online journalism.
