[...] College High Five of the Week: Tennessee Journalist - Pat Thornton highlights the differences between two media products at the University of Tennessee. I’d rather see the current student media produce experimental projects. But if the student newspaper isn’t going to step forward, perhaps it’s time for more online media products. College is a time for experimentation, pushing the boundaries, discovering new things and not being afraid of failure (it’s a lot less costly to fail in college than it is after graduation). If there was ever a place for journalists to take risks and try things that may not work, it should be in college media. College is the perfect time for failure. [...]

Man, that sounds very familiar. Wonder where I've heard it before? :-)

The Daily Beacon's website hasn't changed since the day I stepped foot on campus back in 2000. A call for a revamp is needed.

The printed version of the Beacon is great. Especially for working crosswords in the middle of a boring psychology lecture. :)

[...] A blogger compares Tennessee Journalist to The Daily Beacon’s online efforts: There is no institutional memory at the Tennessee Journalist. It’s a Web-centric publication dedicated to exploring and developing new ways of story telling. That’s why the Tennessee Journalist gets this week’s College High Five. [...]

Thanks for the high-five Pat!

The Tennessee Journalist is the brainchild of UT journalism professor Dr. Jim Stovall, who also started the online-only student publication Dateline Alabama -- now merged with The Tuscaloosa News -- back in 2000. It was also the site that prompted my love of online media.

If you're interested, you can view the source of TNJN's CMS (read-only for now).
