Another good reason to use a form: You can select the subject line of the e-mail you receive from each form. So when I see the subject line I coded into the script, I know it's e-mail from my form and not something personal. When you're checking e-mail on a BlackBerry, that's extra useful!

Lindsay,

I edited my post a bit and toned down the language. The rational behind a contact form is two-fold. 1) It makes it very easy for people to send you e-mails. They don't have to worry about opening up an e-mail program or going to a Web site. Anything that makes it easier on users is a plus.

2) It's better for you. Spam is a huge problem on the Web. A contact form makes it easier for Web masters to hide e-mail addresses from spam bots.

I offer both a contact form and an e-mail address for people to send mail to. This way people can choose the option, but you should give people that option.

what's the rationale for having a contact form -- i.e., why is it considered unprofessional to only include an e-mail link? whenever sending an e-mail to an address i find on the internet, i always prefer to send from my own e-mail account rather than a form on their page.
